Synopsis: Following the deadly events at home, the Abbott family must now face the terrors of the outside world as they continue their fight for survival in silence. Forced to venture into the unknown, they quickly realize that the creatures that hunt by sound are not the only threats that lurk beyond the sand path.
Quiet Place 1 was a ground breaking movie for it’s unconventional portrayal of a specific concept. Much like the film 1917 which sold on the gimmick of “one single shot” Quiet Place, while being in a separate genre, does this by selling a world where terrifying extra-terrestrial monsters attack anything that makes noise. Despite this film having lots of glaring copy paste plots from other much better movies, I still took the ride and enjoyed the destination that Quiet Place 2 took me to.
This film suffers from it’s biggest plot point which coincidentally doesn’t have the bandwidth to carry a full length film. This issue shows when the film opens up with the very first day the antagonist creatures from space land on earth and begin attacking anything that yells. Unfortunately, the opportunity to build the world around the 3 main protagonists is lost when all we get is an all too quiet montage of the last film. I don’t remember much besides the main gimmick from the last film. The characters are familiar from the last film and it’s clear that Evelyin ( Emily Blunt) the mother of her two kids Regan and Marcus leave their farm to go up north and this is where the lack of environmental building hurts the story because it slows way down and gets even quieter. Some scenes are from the perspective of Regan during the family’s walk and the story shifts to looking like a demo reel from the DP of this movie. NO audio plays underneath a significant portion of the walking scenes.
The rest of the movie in act 2 and 3 are aggressively predictable, The family find an old factory which is booby trapped by a rugged survivor who generically points his scope at them before coming to their rescue. The dialogue scenes are few and far between except for absolutely necessary lines meant to glue the plot of the film together. This gives the film a built but not painted house feel. The lack of dialogue scenes couple with complete silence for most of the travel scenes which emphasize that issue. The film works as a basic put together story but fails to actually layer anything entertaining on top of it.
On top of that the film tropes in Quiet Place 2 are too many to name so I’ll just list them off
- Unlikely team: Regan and Emmet they fight early on which is a batman signal of their relationship resolving later in the movie
- Decoy at the marina – Little girl by herself and the end of the marina is a little on the nose of predictable
- Rugged survivor sights Evelyn in his scope and then inevitably saves her
- Mr. Mcguffin – Island resident that helps Regan and Emmet to get to a radio tower literally exists to transport them to the radio tower and then dies.
Although this movie was forgettable and it’s biggest draw was a cheap gimmick, the thrill of a horror movie in a packed movie theater still enthused my movie watching eye and I took the ride all the way through. I still give this film a 7/10 however it is nowhere near as good as the first and it’s is difficult to see how a sequel could do the first one justice.
